Chapter 7

The car ride back was silent. Alex looked out the window watching the buildings blur together into a sea of dark gray. Every few moments, Jasher would sigh. The only other sound was that of the occasional blinker. Every bit of joy Alex had felt when she first discovered Bo back at the bar had died, leaving a hollow feeling in its place. She had no idea how she would save Chase now or even where to begin again.

Even if the flannel demon found her again, what could she do about it? Last time she had only managed to slightly wound it, where it had murdered her in seconds. How many more chances would Heaven give her before they called it quits? And if they did fire her, what would happen to Chase?

Bo pulled into the gravel parking lot. Sure enough, the only car left was hers. Even the neon lights had been switched off. Though there were several streetlights up and down the road, not one of them was in working order.

Shrouded in darkness and under a starless sky, Alex tried one more time. “Are you sure there is nothing that I can say to get you to change your mind?”

“Nothing,” he said. His tone wasn’t harsh, but it was determined. “I have given everything I plan to give to Heaven, and in return, I received betrayal of the cruelest kind. You cannot fault me for refusing to align myself with them again.”

“No, I understand,” Alex said. And she did. She had only felt a fraction of the anger that must have surged through Bo as he left behind his home and his people. The other fallen’s faces reemerged in her mind’s eye. The sorrow buried there would be excruciating to carry day by day. “I just hope that you guys can find some happiness here.”

“And I wish you the best of luck. I hope they don’t screw you over, really. I hope you get your man back. And just so you know, you’re too small to get demon on from the front. Try the sneak attack next time.” He turned to Jasher in the back seat. “I hope you’re not just watching as she runs head-first into danger. Like you did last time. You need to actually do something for your charges, you know.”

“Shut up,” Jasher said. “Nobody asked you. If they weren’t pleased with my performance, I wouldn’t still be here.”

“Yeah, sure,” Bo said. “Whatever you need to tell yourself.”

Alex gripped the door handle and gave it a gentle tug. “It really was nice to meet you,” she said.

Just then, a multicolored portal exploded up in the sky and shot down into the center of town in a perfect cylinder shape. It looked wide enough to consume an entire building, but what was it for?

“Oh, that isn’t good,” Bo said, pointing at the swirling portal raining down into the city. “I mean, that really isn’t good. Damn.”

“No, it’s not,” Jasher said from the back.

Despite everything she’d
